The Navy Historical Archive is a cultural entity, fully dependent, from the organisational point of view, on the Navy Central Library, subordinate to Comissão Cultural de Marinha. The Portuguese Navy, itself is subordinated to the Minister of Defense.

The holdings are divided into:

-         942 Organic Funds/Fonds

-         Private Funds/Fonds

-         Miscellaneous documentation

-         Bound documentation.

-         Photographs and Films.

-         Cartography and ship plans, urban cartography plans and drawings.

- Electronic documentation.

Including records concerning the overseas territories.

The documentary collection of the Historical Archive is not just a record of its memory regarding its multiple activities in different geographical areas, it is also a part of our History.

 

10. Categories, Linear measurement, Period covered

By the end of 2022, the Navy Historical Archive kept holdings of approximately the following amount:

22170 linear meters of records, divided into miscellaneous documentation, codices, bound documentation, photographs, films, cartography and ship plans, urban cartography plans and drawings, and electronic documentation.

434077 digital representations

10000 books in the library

These holdings are from the period of 17th Century up to now.

Reading:

 Monday to Friday from 09:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 13:30 p.m. to 17:00 p.m.

Requisition of documents and reproductions:

Monday to Friday from 09:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 13:30 p.m. to 16:15 p.m.
