9. General description of contents

These first archives were born with the concern to obtain and safeguard documentation of high historical value related to the presence of the Military Aeronautics (1911), Naval Aviation (1916), Air Force (1JUL1952) and Air Force overseas [in Africa & other places in the world] (1961/1975), an objective that progressively extended not only to the collection of inactive documentation and that coming from the units, defunct services and bodies, but also to the collection of spoils and personal collections and other documents of recognized historical value from the national military aeronautical scope. The AHFA in the present, is responsible for the PRTAF historical documents provenance for all Air Bases, Aerodromes, Units, and specialties.

By the end of 2022, the Air Force Historical Archive (AHFA) kept holdings of approximately the following amount:

        8.000 linear meters of written records

        42.961 photographs

        405 aircraft posters

        100 maps and 1.000 technical drawings

        7.300 thousand books in the library.

These holdings are from the period of 28th DEC 1976 up to now.

Decree-Law 868/76, of December 28, of the Council of the Revolution, with the name of Arquivo Histórico da Aviação Militar, later on 23th May 1991, that was the creation of the Arquivo Histórico da Força Aérea (AHFA).
