The Historical Office is a department of Public information and communication Bureau of Italian Navy General Staff. Each Armed Forces in Italy has its own historical archives subordinate to the Ministry of Defence.

9. General description of contents

The Historical Office is responsible for the Historical Archives of the Italian Navy. These include documents from Italian Navy General Staff all the hierarchy, in operational and logistics branch, from the top to the bottom of the chain of command.

By the end of 2019, the Historical Office kept holdings of approximately the following amount:

•                6 Km of written records

•                200.000 about photographs

•                40.000 books in two libraries

These holdings are from the period of 1861 up to now.

Monday to Thursday: 09:00 to 14:00,

Friday: 09:00 to 12:00

The Reading Room of the Archives has an internal web-designed tool with a digitalized guide for Archives and digitalized catalogues of documents and books to easy help visitors in their researches. Paper guide for the archives and paper catalogues are available as well.
